Project Management Principles

The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.” – Michael Altshular (Keynote Speaker/Coach)

When we are overwhelmed, time is something that is generally in very short supply. it can be difficult to see a way to improve things and we don’t take time out to try and improve things because we are so overwhelmed! An outsider’s perspective can often provide some simple, easy to implement solutions that are sometimes referred to as ‘quick wins’. At Finstech, we have found that applying project management principles & methods to our clients can identify areas where these quick wins can be implemented to provide almost immediate value.

Project Management principles can be applied, and add value, to almost every scenario of business life, and even personal life in fact! To illustrate the value of applying project management principles, think about the process of going shopping. You want to make sure you get everything you need, some of what you want, sticking to your budget and in the most time efficient way as possible.

Speaking from personal experience, if you don’t look in your cupboards to see what you need, if you don’t write a list of the things that you need and you go to the shop when you’re hungry… then you spend a lot of money on things you don’t need, you don’t get what you do need and you’ll invariably have to make another trip sooner than you had planned!

By applying project management principles, you can achieve the best result. You would check what you need before you go (Requirements Gathering), write your shopping list (Documenting Requirements, and agreeing Scope & Deliverables), work out what you need & what you want (prioritisation), look at prices to see what you can afford (budgeting), decide where to go to get what you need and the routes to take to get there (Creating a Plan) visit the shops/make you online order (Execution/Implementation), put the goods away when you get home and check against the list (increment review/retrospective).

These fundamentals are not ground breaking but knowing what to apply to which situation is something that we have experience of doing, and have seen the positive results it has had within the organisation’s we’ve worked with.

Rob was an absolute pleasure to work with. He quickly understood all my requirements and used his extensive knowledge and experience to produce a comprehensive job spec which was better than anything I could have conceived. He also identified alternative candidate types which I hadn’t previously considered and this proved instrumental in making an offer for the role. Professional and highly recommended!
